Intyatyambo is an Edu-care centre providing preschool education and day care to orphans and vulnerable children aged 3 months to 6 years old, from the impoverished community of Khayetlitsha. At present they are cared for and taught in containers by local women of the community. Their enthusiastic and intrepid fundraiser, Juliet Curtis, has been raising funds for the past two years to build a new facility. Rock on Wood has been privileged to assist in the planning and the building of their new kitchen.
I was privileged to have a quick tour of the existing creche and the new building going up. The slab had been cast and we were able to reach the upper level via a rudimentary staircase. Juliet proudly pointed out the amazing view of Table Mountain in the distance and “spaghetti” like array of electric wiring dangling down, feeding hundreds of shacks one on top of the other. The new building is a beacon of hope for needy children in this grim environment.
